Neighbor's Yard

5 x 7 inches, oil on board.
$80

Since the pink house next door is empty, its yard is rarely mowed. The grass eventually grows tall and goes to seed, and "wildflowers" pop up. I kind of like it. Grasses are beautiful, if they are not repeatedly beheaded (I can feel my Dad rolling his eyes right now). Anyway, that's what this painting is all about.

This yard has been left to a natural state because the woman who lived there died from cancer. We never met her. She was a nice person, I'm told. I think she must have loved nature. She had many large trees, and a few flowers planted around the house.

Last week one of the fourth graders in a school group that came to Blydenburgh became hysterical when a seed from a tree fell into her hair. It took almost five minutes to calm her down. It happens all the time. I feel sorry for this generation. The natural areas on Long Island are disappearing, although there are people who are actively trying to preserve land. We are very lucky to have these small spaces...our garden and her peaceful yard just over the fence.
